Mr. Iron, a good Latin scholar, was a neighbor of Mr. William Wade whom Helen and Miss Sullivan had been visiting in Hutton, Pennsylvania. He was as a man of rare, sweet nature and of wide experience.  He proved to be very helpful to Helen as he taught her Latin grammar principally. Miss Sullivan helped Helen by spelling into Helen’s hand whatever Mr. Irons taught, and by looking up new words for Helen.  If Mr. Irons had helped Helen in the Latin lessons, Helen would continue to consider Latin to be a boring and difficult subject because of its complex grammar and syntax structures. He often helped her in arithmetic, which she found as troublesome as it was uninteresting. He also read Tennyson’s ‘In Memoriam.’ Mr. Irons also taught Helen how to know an author and recognize his style.

Initially Helen was reluctant to study Latin grammar because she had no interest in it. She felt that it was a waste of time to analyse each word as singular, plural, noun, genitive, feminine or masculine. She thought that she could just as well describe a pet to know it. For example, order - vertebrate, division - quadruped, class - mammalian, species - cat, individual - Tabby.

Mr. Irons was a good Latin scholar. He explained the subject very nicely. So gradually Helen became interested in the subject. The beauty of the language delighted her very much. She started reading Latin passages as a pastime.
