She was killed in the backdrop of 'Operation Blue Star'.
During early 1980s, insurgency in Punjab was on a rise. Khalistan insurgents' leader Bhindranwala was hiding in Amritsar's Golden Temple with his acolytes. Indira Gandhi gave green signal for operation blue star in which Indian army entered the Golden Temple to take on insurgents. Temple incurred great loss and many innocent devotees also died. Sikh community was infuriated as all this happened in their most revered shrine, many held Indira Gandhi responsible for it as she gave orders for the operation.
She was killed by her two Sikh bodyguards who were avenging what happened in Golden Temple.
