It was difficult for Europeans to obtain spices and other goods from Asia
Explanation:
- Spices were used for several purposes including food preservation, consumption, perfuming, and the execution of certain religious rituals. Europe was at the extreme end of the trade without access to East sources of spices and without the power to challenge inflated prices.
- Europe was inspired to participate in trade because of the growing importance of spices and limited availability. They had made a great deal of effort to develop or secure routes to areas wherein spices were produced
- Asia was the powerhouse & center of world trade during this period. Europeans needed the Chinese silk, cotton, porcelain, and spices & in order to help conserve meat. As the spice trade route had remained a land base, it made the transport of these goods challenging and onerous, particularly as the European people had nothing which the Asians wanted.
- In the end, the collapse of the Constantinople harmed European trade. Constantinople was a big presence on both the North & South silk roads in the trade centre. When spices and items from the East fell inevitably, they quickly became costly.
