This is your answer

By 1818, British had captured the domains of the Marathas, Nizam, Tipu and other sundry Indian kings and almost entire India as we know it today was under their control. The only formidable power challenging British Hegemony in the South Asian sub-continent was Ranjit Singh’s Khalsa kingdom comprising the territories of Greater Punjab (including Pakistani Punjab, Indian Punjab, Himachal), Jammu-Kashmir and Multan.

Hope it helps!!

Answer:

It was essential for the British to conquer the Sikhs and Afghans territories as they were the only power which could challenge the British rule.

But it should not be ignored here that the another and the most important reason of the British conquering the AFGHAN AND SIKH territories was to ensure that Russians should be evaded from the country as they were the biggest threat to the British rule and they invaded India through Punjab and Afghanistan. (As published in the document released in 1837)
