The Chola rulers paid attention to their irrigation system and it was important for them to maintain because they were more inclined towards agriculture and during the fifth and sixth century the agricultural needs became higher.

These agricultural needs made the Chola rulers think about the better and proper way of irrigation to grow their crops. To accomplish this various canals were formed from the Kaveri river and were used to irrigate the agricultural fields.

Along with this Tamil Nadu also became a major area for them to irrigate and in order to cope up with the floods they made embankments to protect their crops from such floods.
