It was not that important. The Gemans lacked the resources to send that Oil back to Germany. The British could have easily replace the lost oil with American shipments. Even Hitler never envisioned going that far. He lacked the military capability for such an extensive objective. Even if captured, much like his Russian oil fields, he could not hold them. but It was important to stop the Axis forces from taking control of the Suez Canal. Oil was only struck in Saudia Arabia in 1938 and production was still at low level when the Afrika Korps was operational.
