The drafting of the constitution was done by the constituent assembly.
The members of the assembly were voted by the members of the provincial legislatures.
The Assembly was diverse and represented members from different religions and occupations, and castes.
The constitution is an institution in itself and the constituent assembly worked in a transparent way.
A draft was prepared by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar which was then discussed and nearly two thousand amendments were considered.
Over 114 days spread over three years the constitutions finer points were discussed, debated and finalised.
The process which started in July 1946 saw the partition and the assembly adopted the constitution on 26 November 1949.
It came into effect on 26 January 1950, bringing to the world a constitution which guaranteed universal franchise and equality that was never seen before or practiced.
