Why was it not possible to find a meaningful relationship between atomic mass and properties of elements?

It is not possible (till now I say) because the properties of elements remains same however the mass may differ in case of isotopes (neutrons doesn't involve in any physical properties)
For Example: Iodine-131 is chemically same as plain iodine , it will kill germs on contact ,it just happens also to be highly radioactive.
