It was hard to stop it as titanic had a lot of mass. The greater the mass, the greater the inertia of the object. So, the ship continued in its state of motion and to be stopped, a lot of force has to be applied on it.

Due to less surface area.
Pressure is indirectly proportional to the area on which force is applied.
So,when the pressure applied increases and it becomes difficult to stop the titanic from colliding with the iceberg.
