Jiya was dropped on the wrong side of the road by her school bus and got hit by a car as she tried to cross over on May 9. In fact, she was dropped on the kerb opposite Krishna Colony around 2.30pm. Her mother had signalled to the bus driver to drop her there and asked Jiya to wait while she crossed over to pick her up. But the little girl began to cross the road herself and was hit by a car. She went into coma in hospital and died on May 17.

A probe was ordered in the case by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). Subsequently, regional transport authority secretary Jitender Kumar's inquiry revealed that the school had flouted several norms.
