Different people have different reasons for collecting stamps, but I’ll try to lay out some of the more common ones.
Many postage stamps are works of art. The superb work to represent the key people and places of a country allow one to travel the world from the comfort of one’s chair. This greatly increases one’s knowledge of geography and history as you learn about the important moments for individual countries.
The entire process of printing tens of thousands of identical items fascinates some. Taking a hand engraved design and working through the process of duplication and manufacture in itself is a source of wonder. Often this leads to the area of ‘fly speck’ philately, where an individual will reconstruct an entire sheet of stamps based on known imperfections in the printing process and wear to the printing plates over time.
The challenge of completing sets or countries, or even one of each stamp is competitive.
Using stamps and related materials to tell a story. Thematic collecting is based on a topic or theme. I have an exhibit associated with the telephone that has won awards at a national level. This allows me to share my stamp collection with other telephone enthusiasts.
There are a lot of fun people associated with the hobby. Exhibitions and club meetings provide a social outlet for many that bring people that understand the challenge and fun of collecting together.
Some enjoy the fun of discovering rare stamps in large accumulations, or focusing on stamps with specific cancellations or from certain cities. The direction a collection takes can be very different, yet very similar.
I find it relaxing and educational with a challenge associated with it.
