Kumaraswamy Kamaraj was the leader of Indian National Congress and was better known as the "kingmaker".
Kamaraj was called as kingmaker because during the year 1962, though Congress was in power at the Center but it was losing out on the states.
Herein, Kamaraj came up with a plan known as the "K plan".
According to this plan, he urged the senior party leaders to leave their ministerial posts and devote more time towards organization building. He himself quit as the Chief Minister.
In the year 1963, he was made the President of the Party.
Thus when Nehru breathed his last in the year of 1964, Kamaraj in his role as the President, put forward the name of Lal Bahadur Shashtri as the next Prime Minister which was readily accepted
