Kannauj was located on the Ganga trade route and was connected to the Silk route. It made Kannauj strategically and commercially very important. It was also the erstwhile capital of Harshvardhana's empire in north India. Yashovarman setup a kingdom at Kannauj around 730 AD.

Answer: Kannauj was a prized area because

- In the north, there were mainly three powers who were in constant struggle for the prized area of Kannauj, as it was strategically located in the Ganga Valley. It was a highway for commerce and communication, making it a convenient location, especially for river traffic in the upper Doab area. This implied that whover controlled Kannauj would also control trade and agriculture in and around this region. Kannauj was veryprosperous during the 9th and 10th centuries when a large number of Hindu temples and Buddhist Monastries were built.
