  • While the Rowlatt Satyagraha was taking place, Mahatma Gandhi wanted to launch a widespread movement, all over India.

  • He thought that no such movement will be taking place without bringing the Hindus and the Muslims together. So Gandhiji took up the Khilafat issue.

  • The first world war ended with the defeat of Ottoman Empire, and the Ottoman Turkey was the head of Islamic world i.e Khalifa.

  • There were rumours spread that a harsh peace treaty was to be signed by the Ottoman Empire accepting their defeat.

  • A Khilafat Comitee was formed in Bombay ( currently named Mumbai ) in 1919.

  • The heads of this Comitee were Muhammad Ali & Shaukat Ali.

  • Finally there was a Culcutta session held on September 1920, where it was decided that the Congress would be starting a worldwide Satyagraha on the Khilafat issue.
