because teacher chankaya has taught chandragupta. chandragupta followed his teacher and also wanted his teacher name to be taken with his name.seeing their both's success ..people started taking their name together

As Chanakya was his teacher, Chanakya helped Chandragupta in his journey to be a king of magadh as king nanda insulted Chanakya, when most of the people saw the success of both Chanakya and Chandragupta they stated taking thier name together as the tribute to the relation between a teacher and a student
