I believe that contradictory is true i.e. railway tracks laid down by Indian Government is much more than the tracks laid down by British Government. Here are the reasons for why I believe this:

The real history of “Indian Railways” as a single entity started when India got independence from British rule in 1947.

British were running Railways in India solely for their own interest and profit. Basically the Railway networks they built were used to carry loot from the one state to another.

In all 52 companies controlled the Railways during the British rule of which some were controlled by Indian companies, some by British companies and some by Princely States.

When British realised that they have to grant independence to India eventually, they stopped investments in Railways and allowed the Railways to rot.

So when India got independence, Railways was a daunting task to be completed.

First of all 52 companies needed to be merged into a single company to efficiently monitor the administration and that happened.

Indian Railways was born in 1960’s. Another challenge faced by Railway was to join Kashmir and Assam to rest of the country.

It was achieved and we had one of the most sophisticated railway network in the world joining the whole country from North to South and from East to West.

Considering today’s scenario, present NDA government is building 8 kms of rail road everyday and they are contemplating to build 10 kms per day in the future.

Concluding from this we can say that railway tracks laid by Indian government are much more that the tracks laid by British Government.
