The King's ultimate courage erases some memory of the weaknesses, errors and pretense that have marked his reign and that of his predecessor, leading the Old Regime to ruin.

From the recall of Parliaments to the declaration of war on Austria, to the dismissal of the Comptroller General of Finance Turgot, who had attracted the hostility of the privileged, and the sabotage of the attempt at constitutional monarchy, various acts testify the inconstancy and lack of authority of the king.

However, let us bear to his credit his humanity, the abolition of torture (1780) and his refusal to allow the Swiss guard to fire on the rioters during the revolutionary days of 1789 and 1792. Louis XVI also engaged France in the war American independence and, by convening the States General, allowed the start of the revolutionary process.

Louis XVI is overthrown when the Parisian sans-culottes attack the Tuileries on August 10, 1792. He is imprisoned in the Temple with his family.

On November 20, 1792, his secret correspondence with Mirabeau is revealed in the royal apartments. It confirms that the king was plotting with the Duke of Brunswick (Prince and Prussian General) against the government of the Legislative.

$\bigstar$ Louis ascended to the French throne in 1774 and from the start was unsuited to deal with the severe financial problems that he had inherited from his grandfather, King Louis XV.

$\bigstar$ In 1789, in a last-ditch attempt to resolve his country’s financial crisis, Louis assembled the States-General, a national assembly that represented the three “estates” of the French people–the nobles, the clergy, and the commons.

$\bigstar$ The States-General had not been assembled since 1614, and the third estate–the commons–used the opportunity to declare itself the National Assembly, igniting the French Revolution.

On July 14, 1789, violence erupted when Parisians stormed the Bastille–a state prison where they believed ammunition was stored.
