Why was M Hamel kind to Franz even though he was late for school

1. M. Hamel was kind to Franz because it was his last lesson as well as his last day in school. So he did'nt want to spoil the mood of the calss as well as himself.

2: The villagers had come to attend the last lesson of french, their mother tongue, which they were unable to few years back.

Franz, as always , was late for school that day. Usually he would sneak inside without anyone's knowledge in between the hustle. But that day seemed more like a sunday morning. All the students were on their seats. Franz thought M Hamel would be very angry at him but he seemed to be kind that day. M Hamel politely asked little Franz to take his seat as they were about to begin without him. It was the last lesson on French as from the next day Germany would be taught in the schools of Alsace. So even some of the villagers were sitting at the back seats inorder to pay respect to M Hamels 40 years of teaching.
