India's Madras renamed Chennai.MADRAS, India, July 17 -- India's southern city of Madras has been officially renamed Chennai, local officials announced Wednesday. The change returns Madras to its original name derived from the region's 16th century ruler -- Chennappa Naicker.

The decision to change the name has come 19 years after Madras officially became Chennai. It has come as a surprise as there has been no vociferous demand to change the name. It was in 1996, during the chief ministership of M Karunanidhi, thatMadras was renamed as Chennai
