Maggie was confined to her bed because she had fallen from a window two years ago and she had injured her spine and was unable to leave the bed on her own . The villagers decided that Maggie must be send to the poorhouse as her physical condition was not good . A poorhouse was a sad place , but most of the villagers thought it to be suitable for Maggie because she was poor and diseased child .

Maggie was confined to her bed as she was crippled for life.
The villagers felt pity for her and suggested that Maggie should be taken to the poor-house because for her it would be a blessed change where she will be kept clean, have healthy food, and be doctored.
