In Punjab, there was more unrest then elsewhere, and the northern Indian province was placed under martial law. Despite a ban on freedom of assembly, on April 13, 1919, thousands of Sikhs gathered in a walled garden inAmritsar, Jallianwala Bagh, for the religious festival of Vaisakhi.
