The Necklace

Matilda was not at all happy on receiving the invitation for the state ball because she did not have any rich dresses or jewels. There would be many aristocrats present at the ball and she was irritated at the thought of seeing all those rich women displaying their wealth.

She thought about how pathetic she would look and told her husband that she would not go to the ball as she had no good dresses or jewels. Later on, her husband gives her some francs for buying a dress and helps her to borrow a diamond necklace from her old friend Madame Forestier. She wears these jewels and goes to the ball in an elegant manner.
