Matilda was unhappy despite being pretty and charming because of er financial condition. Since her young age she was quite ambitious. She had so many desires and wishes to be fulfilled. She had wished to be married to a rich man to enjoy the luxuries of life. She had desired to wear dainty, elegant dresses, live in a palatial mansion with all the facilities, servants and maids waiting on her.

Matilda was married to a clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction who could not satisfy Matilda’s all desires for elegant and luxurious life-style. Matilda remained in constant anguish on account of this. The poor house she lived in, ugly walls needing painting, old curtains, worn out furniture reminded her of her poverty
