Maximillien de Robespierre was the architect of Reign of Terror. He executed and guillotined thousands of people on mere suspicion which ultimately paved way for his own execution.

He was executed by his opponents as he had executed thousands of his political rivals on the basis of mere suspicion and without any trial. His harsh rule and terror made the right wing and left wing to unite and thus paved way for his downfall and execution.
