Madame Forestier was shocked after hearing Mathilde's story because the necklace which Madame Forestier gave her was a duplicate one and when Mathilde lost it, She borrowed a real diamond necklace for Madame Forestier. Mathilde had to loose everything that she owned just to give the necklace back.
