Answer:

NORWALK, Conn.—William and Ande Manners say they have never considered their way of life at all extraordinary. But their children do.

“The girls are impressed with it—they say that it's the way life should be,” Mrs. Manners said.

The Mannerses, both authors, have been practicing what many consider to be the new life‐style since before most of its adherents were born. In fact, Mrs. Manners says, she's been liberated throughout her 25 years of marriage.

“Bill has never thought that helping around the house was any threat to him,” she said, “I guess in our house it's a 50‐50 proposition. It's sort of working together—whoever has the time to do something does it.”

And William Manners became a vege tarian long before soy bean stew was common fare on the commune circuit. He was 17 and the year was 1924.

The couple built their own home too. That was in 1950, four years before the first of their three daughters was born, and thrift was the reason. They didn't do it completely alone; they had the as sistance in construction of Mr. Manners's brother and sister‐in‐law, David and Ruth Ann Manners, whose own house on an adjoining plot the two couples had completed earlier.

“We got the idea together,” recalled Ande Manners. “We were both seeking an escape from New York City. We built their house first because they had two children and needed shelter more than we did. Then from July through Novem ber 10, Bill and I slept in a tent while we all framed our house. We moved in on Armistice Day.”
