Mrs. Dorling was cautious while opening the door as she did not want the narrator to come inside her house. Inside the home, her mother’s belongings such as silver, cutlery, crockery, antique plates, Hanukkah, etc. were present; narrator’s mother had given these things to her to keep them safe. In the war, narrator’s mother had to run with her daughter to save themselves. However, before the life returned to normalcy, she passed away. Now, the narrator had come to take her mother’s things back; seeing the narrator come back, Mrs. Dorling got displeased; she was not willing to return narrator’s mother’s belongings to her. That’s why she did not open the door fully.
