A guest stopping at iping in wintertime was an unheard piece of luck, let alone one wasn't a haggler but a seemingly respectable man. That is the reason why Mrs Hall was resolved to show herself worthy of her good fortune because she considered herself fortunate to have a guest at such a time. She show her gratitude for her good fortune by lighting a fire and leaving the guest comfortable by the fireside while she went to prepare a meal for him with her own hands
