South African president F.W. de Klerk removed the ban on the African National Congress and released him.
He got out because the president that put them in jail (P.W. Botha) in the first place died and the guy who took his spoot ( Frederik Willem de Klerk) freed Nelson and all the other people in jail with him for the same reason Nelson was put in jail.
