-»Nelson Mandela served 27 years of his life in prison behind bars at the brutal Robben Island Prison.

-»Nelson Mandela was arrested for treason, illegally leaving the country and charges of sabotage respectively in the years 1961, 1962 & 1963.

-»He was released on 11th Feb 1990 by the South African politician and President, F.W. de Klerk because of the fear of racial Civil Wars and extreme international and domestic pressure.

-»Then he became the first black president on 10 May 1994 with 62% votes in the election with winning of ANC “African National Congress”.

-»Then, after serving as a President from 1994 to 1999, he died on 5 Dec 2013 because of respiratory tract infection.

Hope it helps.

South African president F.W. de Klerk removed the ban on the African National Congress and released him.

He got out because the president that put them in jail (P.W. Botha) in the first place died and the guy who took his spoot ( Frederik Willem de Klerk) freed Nelson and all the other people in jail with him for the same reason Nelson was put in jail.
