Why was non cooperation movement started in 1920 why did gandhi ji call of the movement in 1922?

gandhiji started the non cooperation movement to suppress the British control over India but it is called soon off because the people could not understand the meaning of non cooperation and he wanted to start a bigger and larger movement which would help in gaining independence in India
