Pungi give unpleasant sound when it played . So a barber from the family of professional musicians decided to improve the tonal quality of pungi. He choose a natural hollow stem and do seven holes in it. It gave pleasant sound on playing . He played pungi in royal chamber . Everyone was impressed. Since it was first played by a barber ( nai ) and in Shah's chamber. So it was came to known as Shehnai.
