Rassundari Devi was born in West Bengal and the first Indian woman to write an autobiography and the first Bengali to write an autobiography.

In 1876 Rassundari's autobiography Amar Jiban (My Life) was published. The book is in two parts, the first of which, consisting of sixteen shorter compositions narrated her autobiography.

During her time, it was believed that if a woman learnt to read and write, she would bring bad luck to her husband and become a widow. However even after knowing this, she taught herself how to read and write in secret, well after her marriage.

The reason why she chose to read and write was maybe her ambition was to write poems.
