Reasons why reading of manuscripts was not easy In India:

  • Using manuscripts presents various challenges in case of historians. During the olden times, there was no existence of the printing press, thus scribes manually copied documents. Copying manuscripts is not a very easy and simple task. Scribes made little edits to manuscripts as they were copied. Over centuries of copying, these minute variations increased to the point where manuscripts of the same text created great differences significantly when compared with one another. This is a serious problem because we rarely find the original manuscript of the author today. We are totally dependent upon the copies made by later scribes. As a result historians have to read different manuscript versions of the same text to guess what the author had written in originality.
  • Because transcribing manuscripts was a laborious, expensive, and time-consuming task, the public's need for handwritten texts was not met at all. Manuscripts were fragile, difficult to handle as well as to transport because of their susceptibility, making it impossible to make copies of them. Their limited availability resulted from this.
