The revolt of 1857 is also known as the first war of independence. It marked the beginning of the phase in which the rulers of India started revolt against the British raj in India. Due to the British policies such as Doctrine of Lapse, Diwani,Nizamat, etc. the rulers of India became uncertain. Such as the doctrine of lapse by Lord Dalhousie stated that only a natural heir will inherit the throne of the kingdom which created a problem for Rani Lakshmi Bai.
So from different corners of India many rulers raised the banner of revolt against the British in 1857 at Meerut. But the Indians were defeated by the British forces. Leaders include Rani Lakshmi Bai, Hazrat Mahal, Muhhamad Shah Zafar who was granted pension and exiled to Rangoon(present Myanmar).
