On the land that Narragansett Chiefs Canonicus and Miantonomi gave him in 1636, Roger Williams founded the first permanent colonial settlement on Rhode Island. He called it he Providence treaty. Exiled from Massachusetts when he spoke about religious tolerance, Williams laid down in Providence a policy of religious freedom.

EXPLANATION:

Banished from Massachusetts for speaking out about religious tolerance, Williams established a policy of religious freedom in Providence. Similar communities in the Narragansett Bay were soon founded by other leaders for freedom of worship. Such settlements were called "Incorporation of Providence Plantations at Narragansett Bays of New England" by a parliamentary patent in 1643.

Thousands more people came to Rhode Island in the following decades. In 1675 war broke out because of the growing demand for land. Just 14 months the King Philip’s war lasted, but Rhode Island changed forever. Hundreds of Americans had been killed. Survivors had fled or been abducted to slavery.

Rhode Island became a major player in the 1700s, including the enslavement of Africans, in the trans-Atlantic maritime market. In industrial seaports of Newport, Providence, and Bristol, and in west Rhode Island working plantations, African descent, both slave and free, were a significant portion of the population. In 1776 the colonial era began. On the 4th May of that year, Rhode Island was the first colony to renounce its allegiance to the king. It was precisely two months after the Declaration of Independence.
