The movement/speed of the ball, combined with its mass, make up its momentum. That momentum represents a certain amount of energy. As it moves it is having to force its way forward through air resistance and also overcome a certain amount of friction with the ground even if that’s only very slight (There’s an element here I’m unsure of… sort of the “stickiness” that would exist all the way down to the molecular level as the “ground-touching” point(s) of the ball would come into and exit contact with the ground. Maybe someone else can account for this?)
Air resistance would be the major factor as the ball loses its momentum-energy as it is constantly pushing its way through the air around it.
