The author had his university education and yet was unemployed. That's when he met a shoeshine named Shovan Lal and learned that he was earning three to five rupees per day. So he thought of adopting this as his profession. The author was doubtful in getting a job and thought this profession would suit him as no job was low.

Answer:

The narrator of the story told Shovan Lal that he did not have a job and he wanted to become a shoeshine boy.

Shovan Lal took him to his friends.

These friends came to know that the narrator knew English language.

He could help the shoeshine union write letters to the people in power.

So these friends of Shovan Lal's gave the narrator the money to become a shoeshine boy.
