Why was silk route called so ? Why the traders needed the help of ruler to cross silk route

Because silk was the major trade product which traveled on this road, it was named the Silk Road in 1877 by Ferdinand von Richthofen – a well-known German geographer. This ancient route not only circulated goods, but also exchanged the splendid cultures of China, India, Persia, Arabia, Greek and Rome.

so the routes by which the trade was carried out was called silk route. the help of rulers was needed as the routes passed through several kingdoms and traders could bee looted
so king's help was achieved by paying some tax which provided security to trade
