When Stalin started collectivisation, peasants were forced to hand over their land, and work co-operatively. They were forced to give most of their produce to the state. Kulaks were considered as the main enemies of Communism in which private property was not allowed and everything was held in in the hands of the state asa common property. Kulaks refused to join collectives and Stalin sent soldiers to capture, totrure, beat them or to send them into gulags. Thousands were killed. Stalin made them a scapegoat, and claimed that they caused the femine in the country.
