Stephen Austin imprisoned by Santa Anna in January 1834 for illegally granting land grants to new settlers
Explanation:
- Austin, eager to restore his fortune, wanted to capitalise on his background in Spanish and tried to establish a Texas American colony. In order to restore the country's ruin through brazen colonisation, Moses Austin met the San Antonio government to seek permission for 300 Anglo-American families to settle in Texas.
- In December 1821 the first settlers arrived, and the lower reaches of the Colorado River were chosen by Austin. In the 10 years that followed Stephen Austin & some 25,000 other colonists moved to Texas, mostly Anglo-Americans.
- On 3 January 1834 however, President Santa Ana, who refused to grant Texas distinct status from Coahuila, sent him to prison for dubious insurrection. Austin was eventually released 8 months later, in August 1835.
