The Swadeshi movement started with the partition of Bengal by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon in 1905 and continued up to 1911. It was the most successful of the pre-Gandhian movement. ... It was strongest in Bengal and was also called vandemataram movement.
Lord curzon wanted to part the bengal because he wanted to disunite the hindus and muslims of bengal.But he knew that if he said the true reasons he would be protested by both hindus and muslims so be gave the reason for partition of bengal that ghe state bengal was large state for administration and to make administration easy he parted bengal.
Some people understood the real motive of lord curzon and began the anti partition movement. They made the anti partition movement to not to be divided and this was the spirit of nationalism among begal indjans thus they called the snti partition movement as swadeshi movement.
When it became clear that the government was adamant to implement this partition, the anti government feeling rose gradually among the people of Bengal. Since the public opinion was disrespected, the whole Bengal broke out into national movement against this partition. Hindu-Muslims who was put under threat and Bengali nationalism was wounded. Already there was this satisfaction among the Indians as Lord Curzon interfere the right of India on education, newspaper and local self government. His process of partition was also reactionary and there was a huge public protest and dissatisfaction. From the partition proposal was raised on 6th December, 1903, till it was officially declared on 19th July, 1905, many places of east west and north Bengal witness thousands of public proposals in used public uproar, irrespective of caste, Creed and religious people planged into this movement. This movement became famous as swadeshi that Indian would utilise boycott foreign goods and start using homemade goods made by Indians. For this reason anti partition of Bengal Movement named as Swadeshi movement.
