Answer:

The residents of Iping were suspicious of the stranger and his activities from the very beginning. They used to wonder at his strange, bandaged appearance, his secretive manner, his numerous bottles and science experiments. The stranger was a reclusive man. He did not like to be disturbed by anyone. All he wanted was a room at the inn and his meals. he did not interact with anyone, not even the owner Mr and Mrs Hall. Rather, he got upset when Henfrey, Cuss or the others who showed interest in him. He kept his activities and experimentation with his various bottles and other equipment a secret. Fearenside thought he had seen black patches of skin when his dog had torn the stranger's trousers. This led some to think he was a piebald. On top of it, he never attended church. They thought he was an atheist. Many burglaries took place in Iping: burglary at the vicarage; many people were attacked and injured and the villagers suspected the stranger had a hand in these incidents. Their suspicions were confirmed as the stranger unveiled himself.
