why was the author surprised to see nicola and jacopo working as a shoe Shine boys

This expression is from the lesson , "Two Gentlemen of Verona"

The author was very surprised when he saw the two boys working as a show shine. This is because at morning he saw them seeking berries while he was moving in a car along with his friend. But now they are working as shoe shine

He was very surprised and impressed seeing the boys completing and doing different jobs and works to earn money. He saw that they were working form morning to till night by doing different kind of works.

The author surprised to see Nicola and Jacopo  as shoe shine boys because an other day he saw them selling strawberries he thought they sells fruits  but now he saw them as shoe shine  so this is the reason behind made author to found them strange
