The Bay of Bengal was called Chola Samudram during the Chola period because during Chola dynasty from 9th century to 12th century which was when ruled by Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I invaded and controlled the Bay of Bengal with Chola Navy circa AD 1014, the Bay of Bengal was also known as the Chola Sea or Chola Lake.

  • The Chola State was mainly a feudal society where the villages were self governed and appreciated sovereignty but at the same time it was centerstic as the Chola leaders charged tremendous power on their feudal Lords.
  • During the Reign of Rajaraja I the Chola empire saw an enormous growth of Army and Navy, moreover saw overseas conquest, such as invasion and occupation of Oman, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and Parts of Myanmar.
  • With the development of Navy and overseas conquest the Chola Navy substantiated that its a force to be reconed with and must be honored. It also dominated the trade and industry in Bay of Bengal and portions of Indian ocean.
