Explanation:
In 1903, the viceroy of Bengal, Lord Curzon, divided Bengal which was the largest province in British India. The reason given for the division was that Bengal was a very large province and the division was for better administrative efficiency. However, the British had political reasons for dividing Bengal as there was a powerful wave of nationalism in Bengal which they wanted to curb and also they wanted to disrupt Hindu Muslim unity in order to weaken the rising Nationalist Movement.
The people of Bengal strongly reacted to the proposal of partition, Meetings and rallies were held all over Bengal and there there was widespread opposition and protest everywhere.

The first Partition of Bengal (Bengali: বঙ্গভঙ্গ) was a territorial reorganization of the Bengal Presidency implemented by the authorities of the British Raj in 1905. The partition separated the largely Muslim eastern areas from the largely Hindu western areas on 16 October 1905 after being announced on 20 July 1905 by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India.
