The creation of "Linguistic States" was the first & a major test for "democratic politics" in our nation.

Explanation:

  • Several old states dissolved and several new states were created. States have changed places, borders & titles. In 1947, many old states' boundaries were changed to form new states. It was intended to ensure people live in the same state & speak the same language. Such States were formed not by language but to recognize cultural , ethnic and geographical distinctions. States such as  Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, & Nagaland have them.
  • No language was granted national language status by the Indian Constitution. While Hindi was the language of choice, the central govt did not impose Hindi on states where the people were speaking another language. In addition to Hindi, the Indian Constitution recognizes 22 other languages as "Scheduled Languages"..
  • However before states were created based on language, there wa sinitila resistance from the Central govt. Immediately after independence, the call for the reorganization of linguistic states grew. The leadership of the world was opposed to such a revamp as they had feared that it would weaken the integrity & national unity. Since independence, the situation became precarious, with too many calls for secession being taken into account. This approach  had also undermined the "national interest" for "narrow interest" by promoting regionalism
  • Many considerations such as financial and economic factors needed to be carefully weighed. It was feared that minority languages would become fragile.
