It was the colonial period in India. Europe or mainly Britain had the 90 percentage of import of indigo from America. At that time, the demand of Indian indigo was less in comparison to American indigo in Europe.
The situation changed in 1860 - 61 du to American Civil War. The total export of indigo from America was abolished in civil war. For the fulfilment of indigo demand in Britain, Indian peasants were ordered to crop only indigo harvest in there total agricultural land.
The demand of Indian indigo in Europe increased rapidly and once at a moment it reached upto 90 percentage of total import of indigo in Europe.
