The duel between between Athos and D’artagnan was called off as the duel was opposing the law to duel and troop of cardinal guards had declared to arrest them for dueling.

EXPLANATION:

   When D’artagnan and Athos were ready to start the duel, the cardinal guards with their troops had came and informed them that they are going to arrest them as dueling is against the law.

  D’atagnan team attacked the cardinal guards with the help of their Musketeers and won the fight as they don’t want to get arrested. This made the D’artagnan a hero.
