Why was the family surprised to see the grandfather awake???

This is because all the members of the family including Ben Jordan and Elizabeth Jordan thought that their father(Mr. Abel Merryweather) had already died that morning . The family was also shocked to see the grandfather alive as all of them wanted to share his belongings which they would not be able to do then.
