It started as a response to big tax increases on the middle classes. In France at the time, royalty, the aristocracy, the clergy and the poor (of course) were exempt from taxation. Only the professional, commercial and landed classes paid tax and the new burden became intolerable.

All the leaders of the Revolution were educated middle class men. Initially, it was a tax-revolt but then fell into the hands of an anti-privilege rabble who wanted blood to avenge what they believed had been centuries of oppression and deliberate impoverishment of their communities.

After the Royal family had been eliminated, there was a return to legal constitutional methods, and then a sort-of junta dictatorship.

Of course, eventually it collapsed into the personal dictatorship of Napoleon Bonaparte, who finally proclaimed himself Emperor.

After Bonaparte's fall, the old-style monarchy was reinstated and lasted from 1816 until 1871.

All from a tax-revolt.

the French revolution was started because there was a class division in the nation. the higher class which consisted of kings and nobles were exempted from paying taxes whereas on the other side the lower class had to pay heavy taxes.
